Synthes building - Abstract paint
In 2011 Peter Märkli and Steve Roth showed Caruso St John around the, not yet completed, Synthes building. The building is full of rich and interesting moments but the thing that made me really stop and take note was this painted blockwork in the basement. Perhaps the abstraction was made more potent by the otherwise figurative and constructed architecture. At the time I didn't know if it was the quick decision of a painter or a considered design choice, regardless it made a huge impression. It may, perhaps absurdly, be one of my most interesting architectural experiences. Since then this handling of paint has been a recurring theme in Peter Märklis architecture suggesting it was indeed designed.
